'LADY ELIZABETH' WHITE REBLOOMING DAYLILY FOR FORMAL GARDENS

The Green Man came across this graceful REBLOOMING white daylily 'Lady Elizabeth' this morning, and it's de rigueur for formal garden elegance. Let's look more closely at this gem.

First, The Green Man considers daylilies as "equity" perennials...those that add value to the client's landscaping yet require minimal management. Rebloomimg daylilies bloom their heads off from mid-Spring into November with remarkably little trimming. Daylilies are genuine "troopers" in the garden...taking on rough terrain, iffy but dry soil, and inhospitable locations as long as they get sun.

Happy daylilies are virtually pest and problem-free. Invest in them! However, let's look at several caveats in their employment. Create daylily "drifts" of a single color. The Green Man finds the charm and uniqueness of each variety is diluted when daylily varieties are mixed willy-nilly. Second, chose for COLOR carefully, and keep the NUMBER of varieties to a minimum.

Primary yellow 'Happy Returns' makes the perfect "tie-together" cultivar around which to create a constellation of other subtle shades such as the apricot and pink tones of a The Green Man favorite, "When My Sweetheart Returns."

WHITE daylilies are exceptionally formal in the garden. Hence, they cannot be used in an informal drift. The Green Man recommends employing 'Lady Elizabeth' in formal SYMMETRICAL beds along walkways or in an allee. The spectacular effect white daylilies create is stunning to say the least, so plan carefully, or you will have a lot of plants to remove and replant as recommended. But, definitely use 'Lady Elizabeth' in that special, formal focal point in the landscape. And, a few go a long way.

"One of the stars of the Lovely Lady™ series, this elegant snowy white flower seem all the more pure as it contrasts with a rich green throat. Prettily ruffled, unusually prolific, and neat in habit, Lady™ Elizabeth is also a dependable rebloomer. PP 11,862

Daylilies are the plants every gardener dreams of. They offer glorious flowers in every shade except blue, a long season of bloom (though individual flowers last but a day), and a robust disposition that makes them easy to transplant, easy to maintain, quick to multiply, and resistant to pests. Planted together in large numbers, they quickly crowd out weeds and make a carefree and colorful ground cover. Among the miracles of modern breeding are tetraploid Daylilies, which have larger flowers with heavier texture and produce more blooms per stem over a longer period.

We ship plants that usually bloom the first year. They will outperform lesser grades offered elsewhere. Except as noted, all are "dormant" varieties, which means their leaves are deciduous."
